September 2009, Düsseldorf – Germany: The 35th CIB meeting of the working group W062 took place at the beginning of the month, which was organized by the Fachhochschule Gelsenkirchen. CIB is the acronym of the abbreviated French former name: "Conseil International du Bâtiment" - in English this is: “International Council for Building”. Researchers from universities all over the world presented the results of their work of the past 12 months in the area of “water supply and drainage” to their peers. Prof. Mete Demirez of the university in Gelsenkirchen –with his team – put together a very interesting few days of presentations and discussions. Studor is an industry member of this academic organization since 20 years, and sponsors the event frequently. Intensive sessions were rounded up by nice dinners in and around the beautiful city of Düsseldorf. The traditional technical visit was to the company VIEGA in Attendorn.
Studor has also been asked to organize the 36th symposium, which will take place in November 2010 in Sydney. For more information please visit the CIB 2010 page of the Studor website.

May 2009, Arlington, Texas – USA: Once more the benefits of installing Studor products are proven through projects as impressive as the new 80,000 seat capacity Dallas Cowboys Stadium . Recently completed in May 2009, costing $ 1.15 billion, it is one of the most expensive sports venues ever built and claims to have the largest high-definition television screen in the world (50 x 22 metres). The installation of 150 Studor Air Admittance Valves eliminated the need for unattractive vent pipes going through the roof and therefore limits the potential exposure of the spectators to sewer gas smell. This also allowed the application of kinetic architecture fundamentals with glass doors and a retractable-roof permitting to create quick conversions of the facility accommodating a variety of events.

May 2009, Cairo – Egypt: Studor appointed Pro Service, Cairo as the exclusive distributor for Egypt. This country is a new territory for Studor, but recognizing its solid construction market made it an easy and logic decision to expand the reach of the Studor office in Dubai to include this interesting country. The market introduction is planned with the participation at InterBuild tradeshow which takes place June 18 – 22, 2009 and with seminars for September and October for engineers and contractors. A number of interesting projects are also already targeted.

24 April 2009, Lenting – Germany: A number of engineers, planners and project consultants attended the symposium organized with our German partner, Kessel GmbH, at their new state-of-the-art training centre in Lenting, Germany. The event, part of Studor’s ongoing education activities, was received with great interest. The whole day was dedicated to different aspects of drainage ventilation issues with Studor solutions playing a major role. All the key topics about the usage of Studor AAVs were covered, from how they work, to installation guidelines also mentioning regulations and standards. An interactive discussion session with the participants closed the symposium and provided an excellent opportunity to debate the Positive Air Pressure Attenuator (P.A.P.A.) within the German market.

April 2009, UK: Prof. John A. Swaffield from Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, Scotland, has just released the very interesting paper he gave at the annual CIB W62 meeting held in Hong Kong back in September 2008. Prof. Swaffield leads the university’s drainage research group and is acknowledged globally as being the foremost authority on building drainage and fixture performance research. The downloadable paper “Modelling low amplitude air pressure transient propagation in building drainage and vent systems to allow system analysis and control” provides an interesting comparison between active control (Studor System) and passive control (traditional venting solution) for tall buildings. The paper raises some interesting issues with regards to current sizing of vent pipes and their effectiveness, despite their size being stipulated in the standards. Standards have been developed by “rule of thumb”, now much dated experimental research or, as demonstrated within the paper, based on a fundamental misunderstanding of the mechanisms of transient control and suppression based on passive, fixed-in place vent networks, versus a modern scientific approach utilizing fully researched approach to the actual requirements of a building drainage system and products developed specifically for the demands of the system.

April 2009, Italy: The early 2009 Italian show calendar is over. Bampi, Studor’s distributor in Italy, exhibited in the first quarter of the year at Klimahouse (21-24 January) in Bolzano and Termoidraulica Clima (1-4 April) in Padova. These regional shows were the perfect occasion for the Italian plumbers to get involved with all the market novelties. Despite the recession in the building market, record visitors attended both shows. In addition to any explanation requested, the visitors in Bolzano had the opportunity to benefit from very successfully presented basic trainings. Once again the Studor product range became one of the most successful attractions in the exhibitions. A live display provided an effective and easy way of understanding how to vent a trap with a Mini-Vent: a simple demonstration is very often better than 1000 words! Thanks to our collaboration with Bampi, the Studor brand in the Italian market is becoming more and more popular within the whole industry. Further highs are now possible targets.

18 March 2009, Hove – UK: Mr Milind Chaphekar, of Studor's Indian distributor Aquamate Engineering Pvt Ltd, took the opportunity to visit the Studor team whilst in Europe for last week's ISH exhibition in Frankfurt. Mr Chaphekar met with Steven White (Technical Manager) and Michael Chang (Quality Assurance Manager), as well as the rest of Studor’s Hove team. The meeting concentrated heavily on the use of the Studor System in high rise buildings, as well as the application of the Studor Maxi-Filtra. Mr Chaphekar stated that “due to the down turn in construction in India engineers are looking at their costing in far greater detail than they have done in the boom times, and the cost saving that the Studor range of products provide has become more attractive for the market”.

March 2009, Frankfurt - Germany: ISH celebrates its 50th birthday this year. All exhibitors had mixed feelings of what to expect in terms of visitors considering the world-wide recession, which has hit the building and construction market hardest. However, the first days of the show went better than expected and a lot of happy faces could be spotted. Studor products are being exhibited in various stands.
First of all KESSEL (Studor's German distributor) has dedicated a corner to Studor, with Daniel Rath (Area Manager Europe of Studor) supporting the sales and marketing team of Kessel in the discussions with the German customers. A new player at ISH is BAMPI (Studor's Italian distributor), who is also showing the Studor products with an impressive working display. This is not all; De Decker (a Belgian furniture manufacturer) is displaying the Trap-Vent integrated in the beautiful and award-winning design by Enthoven Associates as an OEM product. The latter is a strategy that Studor will pursue more this year.
Studor also supported the first symposium of "Dry Drains", organised by Jeff Patchell of Australia, which took place this week. The panel of top experts are shown in the below picture (from left to right):
Don Boynton (Principal Technical Offices, Hydraulic Services GHD Group / Australia); Jeff Clark (Manager Plumbing Standards, South Australia Water / Australia); Les Barnard (Manager Plumbing / Technical Services, Sydney Water / Australia); Ron George (Ron George & Associates / USA); Dr. Steve Cummings (R & D Manager Caroma / Australia); Dr. Lynne Jack (Director of Research, Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh / UK) and Prof. John Swaffield (Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh / UK), who was the technical chairman of the meeting.
